Is CBD Still Relevant?
With minor cannabinoid hemp products hitting store shelves, it seems like the spotlight has shifted off of hemp-derived CBD. And now with all of these new options on the market, is CBD even still relevant?
At some point, nearly every individual who uses hemp-based products has wondered this. However, CBD’s continual evolution has kept it at the forefront of the industry. The duration and expansion of this cannabinoid’s popularity speaks for itself.
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol, or CBD for short, is one of the more than 100 known cannabinoids found within the hemp plant. It is also the most plentiful cannabinoid thanks to hundreds of years of genetic selection and breeding.
According to information shared by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, “CBD is nonintoxicating as it does not demonstrate psychoactive activity. However, it exerts several beneficial pharmacological effects. The compound has analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities”.
CBD derived from hemp was made federally legal in the 2014 Farm Bill. However, each state has its own set of rules and regulations governing the hemp program within its borders. For the most up-to-date information on CBD’s legal status where you live, please contact the governing body overseeing the hemp program in your state.
A True Classic Never Gets Old
The expansion of legal hemp products has led to many new and exciting minor cannabinoid products to step into the spotlight. While there are newer niche products like THCB and CBG on the market, CBD’s tenure is nothing to scoff at.
For example, studies on CBD are more established and have a more concrete scientific backing than many minor cannabinoids. In one study published by researchers at the University of Northern Colorado in January 2024, used prior preliminary studies to help with their research on daily CBD beverage consumption in healthy young adults. While this study itself was preliminary, it shows how various studies are used as building blocks to create the full picture of how CBD impacts the human body and how we can use it.
There is even one FDA-approved CBD prescription available on the market. According to the medication’s website, “EPIDIOLEX is a prescription medicine that is used to treat seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Dravet syndrome, or tuberous sclerosis complex in patients 1 year of age and older.”
Another benefit to CBD being a more classic hemp-derived product is the variety of products and flavors brands can offer. While many niche products have one or two options available, CBD products come in a wide variety of flavors and options including tinctures, skin care products, bath and self-care products, and edibles just to name a few.
